Help! My Screen is Sideways!

I sometimes have teachers email me about this problem, so it makes sense to have a blog post that tells them what happened, and how to fix it.

It may have been by accident (at least the first time), but once kids learn this fun trick, they are apt to try it again.  And you have to admit, it IS kind of funny!

To turn a screen sideways or upside down, push one of the arrow keys while keeping Ctrl and Alt held down. The left and right keys will rotate the screen 90 degrees, and the down key will flip the screen upside down.

To fix it, push the key that points in the direction that you want the top of the screen to point. This means that pushing Ctrl+Alt+Up will return the screen to normal.

Getting Pictures from School iPads to Your Computer

Did you know you can transfer content from the school iPads right to your computer (with no plugs)?  Using the dropbox app, it’s easy and simple.

In order to have content transferred directly to your computer, you will first need to install dropbox on your computer.  Be careful, though.  Roanoke County Teachers will want to make sure  it is installed to sync to your desktop and NOT your My Documents folder.  If you need help with this part, I’ll be glad to install it for you. :)  Let me know you plan to do this, and I”ll send you an invite for our school’s student work folder.

When your students create a project on the iPads, have them save it, if possible, to the camera roll (or export as .jpg, or export to photos…it could be worded differently in different apps).  Then have the students open the dropbox app and upload the picture to their grade level’s folder.  Below are step by step directions. It’s very easy, and once you show the students, they will be able to do this on their own!

By the way, for those of you who like such things, the guide above was made with a free app called Snapguide. It was so easy and quick!

Safe QR Code for YouTube Videos

Want to have a video center using iPads and iPods and Youtube videos?  Want to make sure there’s no ads or other videos included?  Then use SaveShare.TV.

AND…you can even use this site in conjunction with QR Code Generator to create QR Codes that link to these safe videos.  Here’s how:

1) Find the video you want to use on YouTube.

2) Copy the link into SafeShare.TV Site.

3) Copy the link you get from SafeShare to a QR Code Generator.  Make sure you choose “website url” for this, not Youtube Video.

4) Download the QR code for that video to use.  We use QR Code Readers such as i-nigma and Scan on the iPads and iPod Touches to scan the QR codes and watch these videos.

Try it out with the QR Code below:

How To Stories…with a Digital Twist!

What do Purple Cows, Nachos, and 3-D Robots have in common? They’re all things YOU can learn how to make, just by watching a simple Digital Story! Yep, so easy even a Third Grader could do it…actually, they did! And they created these digital stories to show YOU just how easy it is! Here’s an example:

So, how did they do it?

First, Mrs. Devlin worked with her students on writing expository “How To” paragraphs. Students then used their paragraphs to create a storyboard for their digital stories. Then they brought in supplies and had “picture day.” During this time, students followed their storyboards and took pictures of the step-by-step process of making their creation. The digital pictures were loaded on the computers in the lab, and students then used PhotoStory to finish their projects. It was interesting to listen to their problem solving skills as they followed their own directions…and even as they created their Digital Stories. Lots of learning took place, and the end product turned out great!

Using Flip Cameras with Movie Maker

flip-video-cameraMovieMakerlogo

There’s two ways to use the Flip Video camera with your Movie Maker software.

First Way–Install Flip Video Software

(Go through the complete process the first time you use your camera with a computer):

  • Plug in your flip video.
  • Choose “View your Videos in Flip Video Software.” (if this option doesn’t already pop up for you, click My Computer > Flip Video Drive > Setup_FlipShhare)
  • Go through the steps to install the Flip Video Software.
  • Now you can export your videos off the flip camera, save them to your computer, or close of out the software altogether. You should also now be able to import videos into Movie Maker.

Second Way–Install the ffdshow Codec

(for lab computers, if you don’t want the flip video software installed, or if the above steps don’t work):

Need to know how to use Movie Maker?  Here’s a Movie Maker Handout.

Now you, and your students, will be able to use your flip video movies in movie maker and create all sorts of great digital stories!  :)
